Preparation for Lactulose Breath Test for IBS
If these instructions are not followed we may not be able to perform the test.
Instructions:
- Arrival time is 8:30am Monday thru Friday.
- Saturday appointments arrive at 9:00am, use East entrance on side of building.
- You should be off antibiotics and probiotics (good bacteria pills) for a week prior to the test.
- Do not have any beans of any kind (including green beans), nuts, soy (tofu), all bread,gum, candy, mints, artificial sweeteners the entire day prior to the test and no food that contain these ingredients. (real sugar is fine)
- Nothing to eat or drink except water after 7pm. No water or smoking after midnight
- Brush your teeth at night and in the morning. You may rinse your mouth with mouthwash
- You may take sips of water with your morning medicines.
- Please bring your pharmacy number and current insurance information on the day of your test.
- Allow 2 - 3 hours for the test to be performed.
Test:
A baseline breath sample is obtained. After this baseline sample, 10 grams of lactulose will be administered in 8oz. of warm water. The sugar is not a problem for diabetics since it is not absorbed by the intestine. A breath sample will be collected every 20 mintues for 1 hour and 40 minutes. We have internet access and television in the breath test room.
We appreciate 24 hours advance notification of any reschedules or cancellations regarding your scheduled appointment. If less than 24 hours notice is given then there will be a charge for the missed appointment.

Directions:
From Interstate I-270:
- Take Olive Blvd. East 0.5 miles to Old Ballas Road.
- Turn Right on Old Ballas Road and drive 0.3 miles to a 3-way stop sign.
- Turn Left onto Olde Cabin Road and turn Left again into the first driveway.
From Ballas Road (also called New Ballas and North New Ballas)
- Turn East on Old Ballas Road and drive 0.3 miles to a 3-way stop sign.
- Drive straight onto Olde Cabin Road and turn Left into the first driveway.
