Specialists in Gastroenterology - Our Practice

Burton Shatz, MD founded specialists in Gastroenterology (SIG) in 1949 prior to the age of flexible endoscopy. SIG is the oldest established and ongoing group of gastrointestinal specialists in the community of St. Louis. Dr. Shatz became a leader in the modern era of diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy. He removed the first polyp by colonoscopy in the Midwest. Since then, SIG has taken an active role in teaching and clinical research at Washington University Medical Center in St. Louis, Missouri.

SIG is a private gastroenterology group practice skilled in patient care and has expertise in all diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy procedures of the gastrointestinal tract. Dr. Shatz retired in 2004. SIG continues to grow and develop. From 2003 to 2004 we were busy designing our new office and endoscopy center. The design and implementation of this center was created so that gastrointestinal medical care could be comprehensive and the procedure center would be a state-of-the-art facility.
